Nitrogen Gas: History & Industry Use

Nitrogen is the most abundant element in the Earth’s atmosphere, constituting nearly 80% of its makeup. The colorless non-metallic element was first isolated in the late 18th century by British chemist Daniel Rutherford and named soon thereafter by French chemist Jean Chaptal.

Nitrogen, atomic number 7 on the periodic table of elements, has revolutionized modern society with its mass production uses. Nitrogen gas has a multitude of uses, and there is no better way to provide a steady supply of on-site Nitrogen gas than with a Nitrogen gas generator.

As an industrial gas, Nitrogen is used in the manufacture of steel, to preserve packaged and bulk food freshness, in incandescent light bulbs, in the production of electronic components, and to help reduce fire in military aircraft fuel systems.

Some of the industry applications of mass produced Nitrogen:

  • Refining Oil & Gas
  • Marine
  • Food
  • Natural Gas Compression
  • Mining
  • Metallurgical
  • Medical & Pharmaceutical
  • Chemical Processing
  • Biotechnology

Nitrogen gas is produced by the distillation of liquid air or by mechanical means using gaseous air. The methods of gaseous air production are reverse osmosis membrane or pressure swing absorption. Nitrogen gas can be utilized in numerous ways, such as inert placement for air where oxidation is unwanted.
